THERE IS A BETTER WAY…

It may surprise you to know that in the United States alone some thirty million women experience some kind of Hair Loss. In many ways, women lose their hair for the same reasons as men. Many women are predisposed to lose their hair because of genetics but the way they lose their hair is different from the way men do. Genetically predisposed men tend to lose their hair in something doctors call male pattern baldness. They lose it around the temple, across the front hairline and in a bald spot at the back of the head. Women, on the other hand, tend to lose hair in a diffuse circular pattern all across the crown. And age doesn’t seem to be as much of a factor in women’s Hair Loss. Even young women can experience this type of devastating loss.

For this reason, doctors believe that age and higher levels of testosterone are not the sole cause of Hair Loss in women. Hormone receptors and blockers and other enzymes are believed to play some part in it. Underlying medical conditions such as autoimmune disorders and polycystic ovary syndrome and diabetes can contribute as well. Such conditions produce less dramatic Hair Loss, often in clumpy, circular patches on the scalp. Childbirth can be a triggering factor for Hair Loss as well, as there is a natural shedding process that comes with the post-delivery hormonal adjustment.

And we are all aware of the devastating effects of chemotherapy on the hair. Usually, this type of Hair Loss will regrow after the treatment is over. But occasionally, it can interrupt a cycle and create a permanent problem if a woman is also genetically predisposed to Hair Loss. Some medications have also been shown to be contributors to the problem.

Aside from the causes of Hair Loss, the effects of Hair Loss on a woman’s self-esteem can be devastating. Society puts a high price tag on appearance. We are all expected to try to live up to the Hollywood beauties we see on the covers of magazines in every supermarket. In many ways, our hair defines us. We are blondes, brunettes, and redheads. But a woman who’s lost that feminine aspect of beautiful hair can find it difficult to fit in to that picture. In fact, she feels out of step with her friends, the other women at work and with her own self-image. Many women withdraw and simply stop living the life they were meant to live rather than explain or make excuses about their hair.
